Why strategic planning for digital marketing and what are the benefits?
Digitalpartner has developed a plan to make it easy for you and your company to plan your business. The five-point list covers the essentials you need to know for successful strategic planning for your business, and it's free!
Evaluate
Opinions are divided on what the first point is. But I think it is most important to start from the beginning. You need to evaluate your company and see where you are in relation to your competitors, for example. You also need to check how everything works internally within the company. Are employees happy or are there things that need improvement?
Start with an analysis. A SWOT analysis is always a good start. It is very easy to understand and it can be done in analogue and digital form. No previous knowledge is required to work with it.
Carry out two SWOT analyses, to assess the external and internal factors.
PESTEL analysis is also a good start. The analysis covers a few more points.
Of course, what you choose to analyse is up to you. You need to decide which points or parts of your business you want to analyse to make it work!
Define
Here are 3 points that are incredibly important for your business and your strategic planning.
- Defining core values
Without core values, your business is just a shell without a soul. No, I am not exaggerating! You need to define values that your company will work by. Values build company culture and increase the attractiveness of a business. Building on a business plan is not enough.
- Defining the vision
It is important to understand what I mean by vision. It is with the help of the vision that you decide where your company is heading. So this is not a goal we are talking about here. It is something you or your company want to achieve. Vision is not something you can measure or put a time limit on.
- Defining the mission
Here you can think about the benefits you want to deliver. The company mission is more concrete than vision. Mission is something you can "touch".
Let me take IKEA as an example, their vision is and has been from the beginning "To create a better everyday life for the many people". And how do they do that? Well, by offering furniture that is cheap and accessible to everyone.
Strategic prioritisation
This is where you start building pillars for your company's future strategies. You need to choose your top level objectives for the coming year or years. Think carefully about the goals for your business here and now. Always keep in mind where your business is now and don't forget your vision.
For each strategic priority, you should develop an action plan on how to achieve your goals and ambitions.
Description of the programme
An incredibly important part of strategic planning is description and making sure your employees are on board with what is going on. This is perhaps easy to miss. But that doesn't mean it's any less important. Whether you have a company with 4 employees or 400, it applies to everyone! Your employees are your most important asset.
To take your company towards its goals, you need to get the whole company on board. You need to inform your employees about what the future holds and what goals the company should aim for. It's not enough to produce a strategic plan that is liked or approved by the management team. Your employees need to understand and know what is required of them.
For the company to move forward towards new goals, it is important that everyone knows what applies.
Execution
Congratulations! You have read this far and learnt a lot. Thanks for the vote of confidence. But this is where the real work begins.
You cannot sit back. This is the time to follow up on everything you have set up and built. Don't forget your key performance indicators. Once you've decided which KPIs you're going to keep an eye on, you need to track those results and monitor whether things are going in the right direction or whether you might need to rethink.
You may be promoting your product through an influencer but you are not seeing increased revenue. Could it be that you have chosen the wrong influencer or maybe you have misunderstood your target audience? Maybe they are on a different channel?
Remember, all data is important.
Are you a beginner? Don't worry! It will come with time. When you work with all the data in practice, it will be easier to understand what to look for.
Don't forget to evaluate your successes and failures.
