Clubhouse is a new social media app based entirely on voice conversations between users. The app is described as a mix between conversation, conference and live podcast. Clubhouse has been around since the spring of 2020 but first broke through in Sweden in January 2021.
Clubhouse is different from other social media. To use the app, you need an invitation. Inside Clubhouse, you can create or enter chat rooms to talk to other users. When you create a chat room, you can choose whether it should be open, semi-open or closed. In closed rooms, only selected users can join.
On the home page inside the app, the user sees which rooms are open and can then join the rooms.
In the rooms, various discussions are taking place. When you enter a room you can hear the conversation going on, as long as you are only listening you are not heard. You can only speak if you want to say something and are let in by the moderators. The moderator is the person who started the room and controls who can be on the 'stage'. The users who are allowed on the "stage" can speak freely, just like the moderator.
At the moment, Clubhouse is only available on the App Store. This means that at the moment only iPhone users can use the app. According to the creators of Clubhouse, they are working on bringing the app to Android, so there is hope!
Recently, questions have been raised about whether Clubhouse's rules are compatible with EU data laws. It is currently unclear how Clubhouse stores calls and information in the app and a German data authority is now scrutinising Clubhouse and how the data collected is used.
To invite people to the app, Clubhouse needs access to your phone book. This means that the app will have access to data of people who have not consented or are not aware that their information is shared with Clubhouse.
Clubhouse themselves say that the calls are saved in order to scrutinise users who break their community rules.
Many people wonder why we need another social media platform. Clubhouse creates opportunities for people to have conversations with others they would otherwise never have connected with. With new discussions constantly popping up, there are always new conversations to take part in.
