What is Google ads and how does it work?
What is Google Ads?
Google Ads or Google AdWords is Google's own advertising service that lets you pay to rank high in search results. Getting high can be difficult and often takes a long time as all pages are ranked depending on many different factors in Google's search algorithm.
There is really no need to wait for your new website to move up the rankings. By making use of Google advertising, you can see results immediately and it's not as difficult to use or as expensive as you might think.
When you do a search in the Google search engine, the adverts that companies have paid for appear at the top of the search page. They are labelled with a green label that says "ad". These companies have used Google Ads and they pay to be there.

How does Google ads work?
The way it works is that you decide which keywords or search terms you want to rank highly for. For example, if you run a hairdressing salon and want to rank highly when someone searches for "hairdresser" or "cheap hairdresser Örebro". Then you make a bid on how much you are willing to pay for each time someone clicks on your advert or sees your advert in the search results. Then you are ranked compared to your competitors who also bid on your particular keyword or search term.
How is the ranking done?
The ranking is not just about the highest bidder, but more importantly is that the keyword matches the content of the page. Your bid is only one of five criteria in the ranking and the ad that best matches the criteria is the one that ends up at the top of the results page.
The five criteria:
- The quality of your advert and landing page
- Quality thresholds that your advert must contain, such as location information and that the advert works on different screen sizes.
- Search context. For example, your page must contain the search query.
- Ad extensions and other ad formats: these are the details that you can add, such as a phone number or more links to other pages on your website.
- Highest bid
It's very important to choose your keyword or search phrase carefully so your customers find you.

What does it cost to advertise on Google?
First, you decide which keyword or search term you want to bid on and how much you want to pay. Then there are two options you can you can use to advertise.
- CPC - Cost per Click. Cost per click. This means that you pay every time someone clicks on your ad link in the search results.
- CPM - Cost per impression. Cost per impression. This means that you pay for every 1000 times your advert appears in the search results.
CPC - Cost per click is by far the most common and the one we recommend you use.
