After reaching 100 million members in less than a week, Meta's latest social media platform Threads became the fastest growing app! For those of you who haven't tried Threads yet, here's an introduction.

What are Threads?

Threads is a text-based social media platform built by the Instagram team. The app is designed to start conversations and the platform is meant to foster discussions around specific topics or ideas.

How does the app work?

  • You simply log in to the app using your Instagram account.
  • The app has two different feeds, one where you can see the people you follow and a 'for you' feed where you can see a mix of those you follow and recommended content.
  • The app then allows you to write posts with a maximum of 500 characters and include links, photos, gifs and videos up to 5 minutes long.
  • You can also do small surveys in the app with up to 4 answer options.

A decentralised internet

Meta plans to make the platform compatible with ActivityPub, the open social networking protocol established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This would mean that people using other compatible apps should be able to follow and interact with people on Threads without having a Threads account, and vice versa. So if you have a public profile, this means that your posts would be accessible from other apps, leading to you being able to reach new people without having to have accounts on multiple platforms. Something that could be a great advantage for marketers and businesses who can then reach more people with less effort.

What are Threads for?

Threads is a social media platform that focuses on facilitating conversations and interaction around specific topics. It can be used to create and participate in discussions, share thoughts and ideas, and network with people who have common interests. As a business, you could use it to find and integrate with people interested in what you do. At the moment Threads seems to be a light-hearted app with a lot of humour shared so to fit in there I think you should have a similar approach.
