He discusses this sensitivity, which he calls emotional sensitivity, in relation to intelligence. Just as you can have an underlying general intelligence that affects cognitive processes, you should be able to have an emotional intelligence that affects the ability to judge the emotions of others, he said. Beldoch was the first to use the term emotional intelligence.

He felt he could show from his research that the ability to judge the feelings of others is not made on the basis of general intelligence but on another perhaps equally basic ability. There he surmises that something that could be called emotional intelligence is what he is looking for.

Today, however, emotional intelligence, or EQ, is mainly associated with Daniel Goleman who in 1995 wrote the book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. His approach to emotional intelligence and its value as a success factor has been praised by the media and the public. However, it has been criticised by researchers in the field. They argue that it is not a simplified picture but a distorted one.

The definition of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is often described as the ability to understand and manage emotions, as well as to use emotional knowledge to enhance thinking and effectively manage tasks. Emotional intelligence includes empathy, self-motivation, self-perception, self-regulation and social skills. Emotional intelligence is a measure of one's ability to socialise or relate to others.

Different aspects of Emotional Intelligence

Own feelings

Other people's feelings

Identification of emotions

Self-knowledge, self-awareness, identification and differentiation of own emotions.

Identifying and differentiating the emotions of others.
Feel sympathy for.
Empathise with.

Regulation of emotions

Regulation of own emotions, stress management.

Regulation of others' emotions, conflict management.

Identifying your own emotions is about having some self-awareness of your feelings and why you feel what you feel. An emotionally intelligent person can also calm someone who is anxious, can make someone who is uncomfortable feel comfortable, can make someone who is negative see the silver lining.

Areas where Emotional Intelligence has been studied

The areas in which emotional intelligence has been studied are

Education and learning

Labour

Relationships

Well-being and health

Leadership and management

What are the problems with Emotional Intelligence?

Some researchers argue that the studies conducted on EI have shown that it contributes little or nothing to explaining or predicting academic and professional success. Which is different from IQ, which is considered a very good predictor. There are also several problems that can arise when measuring EI. For example, it is difficult to prevent a person from lying in tests to achieve a higher EI.

Most of what is written and said about emotional intelligence is speculation, with statements based on researchers claiming to have studied emotional intelligence but in fact studying something else or using such vague wording and questionable methods that no conclusion can be reached. Only a small proportion of studies actually test emotional intelligence.

Other problems associated with emotional intelligence are training programmes that have been developed to increase a person's EI. These programmes are not always well thought out and may include training on something completely different. The programmes rarely lead to the results they claim to provide.

So how should we summarise Emotional Intelligence? Emotional intelligence is about the ability to understand and manage emotions, both your own and those of others. Despite some studies on the subject, it is difficult to prove its effectiveness. There are some problems with the research on EI, such as the impossibility of obtaining a 100% accurate result in some cases. Is Emotional Intelligence something that companies should invest more in? We think this is up to each company to decide.

Want to learn about voice search?
